CFHK Foundation Applauds Deferred Enforced Departure Extension for Hong Kongers in US

Updated: 1 hour ago

January 16, 2025 – Yesterday, the outgoing administration of President Joe Biden extended the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) for certain Hong Kong residents for 24 months, underscoring the U.S. government’s commitment to stand up for Hong Kongers and their freedoms. In a memorandum, the White House cited politically motivated detentions in Hong Kong and the sentencing of the Hong Kong 45 for pro-democracy activities as “compelling” foreign policy reasons to extend the DED for certain Hong Kongers currently residing in the U.S. until February 2027.

The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation applauds the move, having campaigned tirelessly on this issue, not least contributing to a joint letter earlier this week detailing the urgent need for the Biden administration to extend protections for Hong Kongers at risk of persecution should they be forced to return to their home city.
