Bio

Clarisse Yeung is a Hong Kong artist, activist, and former District Councilor, widely recognized for her advocacy in cultural preservation and community development. Yeung holds a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a master's degree in visual arts from the Hong Kong Baptist University. She was a part-time post-secondary institute lecturer specializing in arts, culture, and policy research. [1] Yeung was the co-founder of Umbrella Movement Visual Archive (雨傘運動視覺庫存計劃), which gathered art installations, photographs, and other artworks related to the 2014 Umbrella Movement; the exhibit was featured at London’s British Museum. [2]

In 2015, Yeung ran in the District Council election and won a seat against a pro-Beijing candidate. In 2016, she formed a pro-democracy group named "ARTicipants" together with 14 other candidates, running for seats in the Culture sub-sector in the 2016 Hong Kong Election Committee Subsector elections. [3] During the 2019 pro-democracy movement, she initiated a group of fresh faces called Kickstart Wan Chai to run for the Wan Chai District Council. [4] The group won six seats in total with Yeung re-elected with 2,340 votes. With the pro-democrats seizing control of the council, Yeung was elected the chairwoman of the Wan Chai District Council. [5

In July 2020, Yeung participated in the 2020 Hong Kong pro-democracy camp's primaries for the Legislative Council, running for the camp's nominations to run for the Hong Kong Island constituency. On January 6, 2021, Clarisse Yeung was among over 50 pro-democracy figures arrested under Hong Kong’s National Security Law for participating in or organizing the election. 47 of them were officially charged with conspiracy to commit subversion on Feb. 28, 2021. During the marathon trial, Yeung collapsed and fainted and was hospitalized; in a Facebook statement following the event, she said that she fainted due to lack of food and was treated for low blood pressure. [6] She was released on bail later on March 5.

Court records indicate that Yeung was granted a three-month reduction in sentence for “her possible mistake as to the lawfulness of the scheme”, as well as an additional three-month reduction due to letters praising her efforts for cultural policies and charities. [7

On Nov. 19, 2024, Clarisse Yeung, among 16 who pleaded not guilty, was convicted and sentenced to 6.5 years in prison. She filed an appeal against the conviction and sentence on Nov. 26, 2024. [8]
