CFHK Foundation Testifies in Canadian Parliament on Hong Kong’s Growing Role as a Center of Sanctions Evasion

Samuel Bickett, author of the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong (CFHK) Foundation report, “Beneath the Harbor: Hong Kong’s Leading Role in Sanctions Evasion,” testified before the Canadian Parliament’s Standing Committee on International Trade. Bickett provided evidence that Hong Kong has become the preeminent global transshipment center of illicit finance and advanced technologies for Russia, Iran, and North Korea, and presented policy options for the Canadian government and international community.

 

The CFHK Foundation is grateful for the strong leadership of Judy Sgro, Chair of the Standing Committee on International Trade in Canada’s House of Commons, for defending freedom and human rights in Hong Kong and around the world. Anatoly Kargapolov, Russian Consul General to Hong Kong, said growing ties between China and Russia had opened up new opportunities for collaboration with the city and urged Hong Kong to host economic forums with former Soviet states.

In a media briefing Hong Kong officials said there is no time limit for prosecuting the more than 7,000 individuals arrested in connection with the 2019 protests who still have not been charged. Of those arrested, police told HKFP in June that 7,537 were male, and 2,742 were female. They ranged in age from 11 to 87, with 1,754 under the age of 18.

 

A Hong Kong woman has been denied bail after allegedly vandalizing National Day banners and posters set up by pro-Beijing parties. Lam’s application for bail was denied on Wednesday, with the court saying she will be detained until her case is next brought up in court on December 11.
