23 October 2024 (Ottawa, Canada) – The Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights (RWCHR) and the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong (CFHK) Foundation are joining forces in Ottawa to advocate for urgent action against human rights violations in Hong Kong.
The partnership coincides with RWCHR’s recent submission of a sanctions recommendation to the Canadian government. The file details systematic human rights violations by authorities in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), including arbitrary arrests, political repression, torture, and transnational repression.
RWCHR is calling on Canada to impose sanctions on ten key individuals, including Hong Kong's Chief Executive and other high level officials, for their roles in undermining the rule of law and suppressing democratic freedoms. One of these individuals holds assets in Canada.

RWCHR and the CFHK Foundation are calling on the Canadian government to act in accordance with its foreign policy objectives and impose sanctions on the Hong Kong officials responsible for these abuses. Doing so would affirm Canada's leadership in defending the international rules-based order, protecting human rights defenders, and promoting the autonomy and democracy of Hong Kong.
A joint delegation from RWCHR and the CFHK Foundation was in Ottawa from October 7-11, meeting with Canadian policymakers and urging the government to impose targeted sanctions on officials responsible for ongoing abuses in the region.
Key members of the delegation included Jonathan Stivers, U.S. and Canada Director for the CFHK Foundation and former Obama Administration official and Congressional staff; Mark Sabah, UK and EU Director for the CFHK Foundation and former director of the Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign; Shannon Van Sant, Strategy & Public Affairs Advisor for the CFHK Foundation and former journalist; and Brandon Silver, an international human rights lawyer and Director of Policy and Projects at RWCHR.
Next week, Samuel Bickett, author of the CFHK Foundation report, “Beneath the Harbor: Hong Kong’s Leading Role in Sanctions Evasion,” will testify on behalf of the CFHK Foundation before the Standing Committee on International Trade in Canada’s House of Commons. He will speak about Hong Kong’s growing role as a transshipment center of illicit finance and advanced technology for Russia, Iran, and North Korea, and present policy options for the Canadian government and international community.

23 October 2024 (Ottawa, Canada) – Le Centre Raoul Wallenberg pour les droits de la personne (CRWDP) et la Fondation du Comité pour la liberté à Hong Kong (CFHK) ont joint leurs efforts à Ottawa pour plaider en faveur d'une action urgente contre les violations des droits de la personne à Hong Kong.
Ce partenariat coïncide avec la soumission récente par le CRWDP d'une recommandation de sanctions au gouvernement canadien. Le dossier décrit des violations systématiques des droits de la personne par les autorités de la Région administrative spéciale de Hong Kong (RASHK), y compris des arrestations arbitraires, la répression politique, la torture et la répression transnationale.
Le CRWDP appelle le Canada à imposer des sanctions contre dix personnes clés, dont le chef de l'exécutif de Hong Kong et d'autres hauts fonctionnaires, pour leur rôle dans l'affaiblissement de l'État de droit et la suppression des libertés démocratiques. Le CRWDP et la Fondation CFHK appellent le gouvernement canadien à agir en accord avec ses objectifs de politique étrangère et à imposer des sanctions aux fonctionnaires de Hong Kong responsables de ces abus. Une telle action affirmerait le leadership du Canada dans la défense de l'ordre international fondé sur des règles, la protection des défenseurs des droits de la personne et la promotion de l'autonomie et de la démocratie de Hong Kong.
Une délégation conjointe du CRWDP et de la Fondation CFHK s'est rendue à Ottawa du 7 au 11 octobre. Elle a rencontré des responsables politiques canadiens et a demandé au gouvernement d'imposer des sanctions ciblées aux fonctionnaires responsables des abus commis dans la région.
