X.R. Li

X.R. Li is the founder and board member of several human rights nonprofit organizations focusing on China and is a co-editor of Charter 08, a collection of essays by “Charter 08” signers and supporters. Previously a research faculty at the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy at the University of Maryland, she is the author of Ethics, Human Rights, and Culture, and opinion articles published in newspapers like the New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times. Her scholarship received support from the Institute for Advanced Studies, the John and Catherine MacArthur Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Growing up in China, she was sent down to a mountain village for “re-education,” then studied philosophy for a BA and MA in universities in China and taught in Beijing, before earning a PhD. in political philosophy at Stanford University.
