Canadian Citizenship Campaign for Jimmy Lai Kicks Off as He Receives More Awards

Canadian lawmakers kickstarted a campaign to grant Jimmy Lai Canadian citizenship, backed by Senator Julie Miville-Dechêne, Liberal MP Judy Sgro, Conservative MP Shuvaloy Majumdar, and Bloc Québécois MP Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe.

Lai was awarded an Honorary 2025 Bradley Prize at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. His son, Sebastien Lai, received the award on his father’s behalf.

A cousin of former Canadian parliamentary candidate and Hong Kong activist Joe Tay, who has been issued with a HK$1 million bounty by Hong Kong police, and her husband were taken in for questioning, just weeks after another of Tay’s cousins and his wife received the same treatment.

Kinda Li, Jimmy Sham, Roy Tam, and Henry Wong — four of the Hong Kong 47 group of democrats imprisoned for participating in a democratic primary election — were released on Friday morning after serving more than four years in jail.

The Hong Kong Journalists’ Association criticised Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee for remarks indicating his government had decided Hong Kong’s independent media were evading taxes before launching a simultaneous audit of eight news outlets, 20 journalists, and their families.

North America – Hong Kong

Jimmy Lai received the Law Society of Ontario 2025 Human Rights Award at a ceremony in Toronto. His son, Sebastien Lai, accepted the award on his behalf.

CFHK Foundation Strategy and Public Affairs Advisor Shannon Van Sant rallied support in Canada’s Parliament. Her meetings in Ottawa included MP Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe, Senator Julie Miville-Dechêne, and MP Tom Kmiec.

On June 4, CFHK Foundation staff will gather at the Victims of Communism Memorial in Washington, D.C., for the 2025 Tiananmen Square Massacre candlelight vigil.

UK – Hong Kong

The Times legal editor Jonathan Ames cited a CFHK Foundation release on the introduction of the Judicial Sanctions Act in the U.S. Senate, in an article questioning the ability of two British judges, Lord Neuberger and Lord Hoffman, to remain on the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal.

Tributes were paid to the Bishop of St Albans, Alan Smith, as he used his final appearance in the House of Lords before retiring to ask a question about Jimmy Lai’s welfare.
